But the 16-year-old isn’t waiting until she graduates to start her creative journey.
On Friday, from 6pm, she will join other local artists in the latest Maitland Art Drop.
From time to time, artists will drop a piece of their art in a secret Maitland location, before posting their drop to social media.
It is up to art fans to find the artwork based on the online clues, much like a scavenger hunt.
This is the first art drop for the Rutherford Technology High Year 11 student.
“I wanted to try something different and just give it a go,” she said.
“I love how art allows you to be creative and do whatever’s on your mind.”
Those interested in finding Emily’s art should keep an eye on her Instagram profile – @emilyplayford – to follow the clues.
Maitland Art Drop exists to bring the art community together and provide exposure for budding artists.
