The mercury is set to hit the 40s on Wednesday with a maximum of 42 degrees predicted.
And it’s not going to get much better.
Thursday and Friday are forecast for tops of 41 degrees and 43 degrees on Saturday.
There could be some respite next Sunday with a top of 27 degrees tipped along with some showers.
On Monday the rise in temperatures will start, with the daytime temperature to sit between 30 and 36 degrees. Tuesday will be warmer with a top of 38 degrees forecast.
On Wednesday conditions take a turn for the worst with a maximum of 42 forecast for Maitland and 43 for Cessnock.
Thursday and Friday have tops of 39 degrees forecast for Maitland and 42 and 41 for Cessnock.
Hunter New England Health is warning residents to take care during the hot spell and drink plenty of water even if you do not feel thirsty – check the colour of your wee – if it’s pale you’re drinking enough.
Avoid alcoholic, hot or sugary drinks including tea and coffee (they can make dehydration worse). Drink cold drinks and eat smaller cold meals such as salads and fruit.
