In previous years, funds raised from the hot ticket event have been allocated to support youth and people with disability through projects across Mai-Wel including Mai-Wel Creative Arts and Mai-Wel LabourForce Solutions.
This year, funds will support participants with complex/high support needs at Mai-Wel’s lifestyle and leisure centre, The Hill in Telarah.
Mai-Wel Group CEO Lynne Graham said she was delighted to announce funds raised will be allocated to the creation of a much-needed sensory garden and sensory rooms at The Hill.
“It is facilities like these which are so vital, yet there are simply not enough of in our community at the moment,” she said.
“The sensory garden and sensory rooms will provide opportunities for people with a disability to experience a space that will both stimulate and calm their senses.”
Manager of The Hill, Margo Kennedy said the first project will be creating the sensory garden to assist people in a wheelchair or with other physical or mental challenges.
“Time spent in natural environments can provide a range of health benefits and can contribute greatly to emotional and physical wellbeing. Most gardens offer visual appeal, but a sensory garden is designed to stimulate all five senses,” Ms Kennedy said.
“Our next goal is to provide sensory environments where participants can relax and enjoy an environment which eliminates all distractions.
“There are a host of benefits of a sensory room for those who require them, including improved balance, movement and orientation, enhanced learning through play, sensory stimulation and assistance with behavioural problems.”
The Hill provides support for participants from Mai-Wel’s Lifestyle and Leisure service area who have complex needs or behaviours.
Tickets to the Gala Ball are available for $160 per person in tables of ten. Tickets include; canapes, three-course meal, premium wines, beer and soft drinks, fantastic live music from returning band, Big Bam Wham and exciting fundraising activities...plus a few surprises.
