Despite his winning performance, it wasn’t enough for Rohan Tungate to defend his Australian title finishing second in the overall Championship Series to Max Fricke from Victoria.
“I’m really happy about it. The most important thing is that I feel comfortable on a motorcycle and I still have a chance to get into the Grand Prix cycle,” Tungate said in an interview with his Polish speedway Club KZ Orzel Lodz after renewing his contract for 2019.
Tungate will be out to emulate his latest performance when he contests the 2019 Tex Macdonald Forever Young Cup at Kurri Kurri Speedway on Saturday night.
The Forever Young Cup is one of the most special events on the Hunter speedway calendar, with local favourites Alan and Josh Macdonald putting together the annual tribute to their father in conjunction with the Kurri Kurri Speedway Club
Tungate regards Kurri Kurri Speedway as his home track and recognises the support he gets from a very vocal troupe of family and friends.
“I wish I could take them with me wherever I go,” Tungate said.
After Saturday night’s competition, Tungate will focus on training on his mountain bike and work with his personal trainer Adam Shields.
German International speedway top gun Erik Riss will have his last competitive ride at Kurri Kurri Speedway before his return to Europe to prepare for his hectic 2019 racing season.
Riss made his maiden appearance at Kurri Kurri Speedway in the Jason Crump Invitational on Boxing Night.
He scored two wins on the night and qualified for the B Final. He finished third and missed a start in the A Final.
Racing starts at 7pm in what is the second last meeting of the summer.
The final meeting at Kurri Kurri is the NSW Senior and Junior Sidecar titles on Saturday, February 9.
