The East Maitland local has been involved with the party for nearly a decade but it’s her first time as a candidate in a state election.
“I have been a member of Animal Justice Party since they began in 2009. Before this I was a member of the Greens Party,” Ms Johnson said.
“I moved because Animal Justice Party have stronger animal protection policies and no vested interest from party members who make money from animal exploitation.
“I am motivated to run as a candidate to help the fight for getting animal protection acknowledged in parliament.
“No other party on the cross bench has ever been there for the main purpose of making sure animals are protected from cruelty.”
Ms Johnson has a Bachelor of Science from Newcastle University, and has been involved in activism for over 15 years.
The Animal Justice Party has a number of promises on the table for this election including creating laws to ban cruel life long cage confinement of hens in intensive egg farms and setting up an independent office for animal protection.
“In the Hunter region, we have a candidate for every electorate,” Ms Johnson said.
“We are a strong party with lots of experience. Our core values [of] kindness, equality, rationality and non-violence mean that voting for the animals is also helping you.”
Ms Johnston joins Labor MP Jenny Aitchison, Liberal Party’s Sally Halliday and Greens Party candidate John Brown in the race.
