The Bears, who opened their campaign with a 3-0 win against Adavance, need only a draw from their final pool game against the Hornets at Turner Park on Saturday night to keep their Heritage Cup title defence alive.
The Bears under new coach Kew Jaliens proved too strong for Merewether in last Sunday’s opening game scoring three second-half goals to take top spot in Pool A.
Cessnock City FC had the bye in the first round and after their 1-all draw against Merewether must beat Weston to assure a spot in the finals.
A draw would be insufficient to progress as the second placed team with the best result as Wallsend FC defeated Lambton 2-1 in the other game at Turner Park on Tuesday night.
The game followed the Pool C showdown between Wallsend and New Lambton.
The Hornets face the Bears in the final Pool A game on Saturday at Turner Park with kick off at 6.30pm.
The three pool winners and second team with the best results meet in the semi-finals which are scheduled for Tuesday, February 12 at Macquarie Field at Speers Point.
The final and play-off for third are at Rockwell Automation Park on Saturday, February 16.
