The decision comes after former Maitland sporting hero and deputy mayor Brian Burke had lamented the lack of action from council on the Hall of Fame.
Committee Members are responsible for assessment of nominations and recommendation of Hall of Fame inductees for endorsement by Council. The successful nominees will join the Mayor and four Councillors on the committee until September 2020.
The City of Maitland Hall of Fame celebrates outstanding achievement and contribution of individuals from all spheres of the community who have made significant and enduring contributions in a diverse range of fields and areas of endeavour.
"It's great news," Mr Burke said when told of the development. "I just council looks at the selection criteria so the Hall of Fame represents people who have contributed to the Maitland community without necessarily representing Australia or the state."
Hall of Fame nominees may include, but are not limited to arts, theatre and literature, business and public service, military service, research and education, science and innovation, and sport.
The role of Committee member would suit someone who is interested in community and who knows the city and its people well.
