But for Tenambit's Jaslyn Walters, it's all about having fun.
"Some girls plan it months ahead, you've got to think about every aspect," she said. "But everyone is so supportive. It's always really fun."
Ms Walters gained an interest in all things retro from her mum, who used to collect vintage goodies and sell them.
"I've always had an interest in the style and now I apply it to my everyday life," she said. "It's not just about pretty dresses. You can wear whatever you want."
The 2019 Miss Maitland Showgirl second runner-up has been attending the Nostalgia Festival for years and plans to go along on the Sunday of the upcoming event from March 29-31.
She said she loved the old cars, the market stalls and the atmosphere of the Rotary Park bash.
"It's one of my favourite festivals," she said. "I always try to go along one of the days. It's just a cool event."
