- to be fully public,
- to receive extra funding - Labor has committed $470 million, and
- for construction to start a year earlier than planned.
I have successfully pushed the Government to
- complete the Victoria Street Station lifts,
- install Return and Earn machines,
- recruit an additional 10 police for Maitland; and
- start work on a new ambulance station.
I am proud of Labor's commitment to education. A Daley Labor Government will:
- deliver a new public primary and high school for Maitland
- sign up to the full Gonski package, which will see more than $1500 per child additional funding,
- employ 5000 new teachers in our public schools,
- make TAFE free for more than 600,000 students,
- make public transport free for students, all day every day.
We'll employ 5000 new nurses and midwives in NSW with nurse-to-patient ratios.
Locally Labor will invest:
- $32 million for local road improvements, and
- $5 million to upgrade Maitland Netball courts to be the state's only regional netball competition facilities.
I will continue to put Maitland first and ensure we get our fair share of government investment.
SALLY HALLIDAY
Liberal
Sally comes from an old Maitland family. Her great grandfather, Walter Howarth, represented Maitland for the United and then Liberal parties for nearly 30 years. Sally is a single mum of two boys, a foster carer and a primary school teacher.
Sally is a very active community member, assisting in her role on council as former-Deputy Mayor and current Councillor.
On council she is a committee member of the Maitland Health Advisory Committee and Flood Management Committee. She is part of the local Lions Club, MRAG member, numerous historical groups including MRM, Early Links, Maitland Sport and Recreation Board, local church and 'Y Hockey Club'.
Sally is very excited about the opportunity to stand for the seat of Maitland. She says 'It's time the people of Maitland are told the truth. Liberals have balanced the NSW budget. They can deliver services and infrastructure for the people of Maitland. They care about their community. This is what they deserve from their local member'.
Here are some of the items a re-elected NSW Liberal Government will do for Maitland:
- $470 million new Maitland Hospital
- $3.8 million new Rutherford Ambulance Station
- $1.5 million traffic improvements at New England Highway roundabout
- $35 million of upgrades for Bolwarra, Rutherford and Ashtonfield Public Schools
- 2 mental health experts in every public high school
- Before and after school care in every primary school
- Air-conditioning for 18 schools across Maitland
- Just under 175,000 fee-free TAFE placements for four years
- Boosting drought support for NSW farmers - adding a further $1.5 billion to their aid.
JOHN BROWN
Greens
I am a freelance journalist and an environmental activist. I have lived in Maitland for more than 30 years and I'm running for State Parliament because I believe we need to act now on climate change.
Together we can change the face of this city for the benefit of future generations.
We need to tackle climate change by rapidly transitioning to publicly owned renewable energy. We support a NSW Government-owned not-for-profit energy retailer which would bring prices down for homeowners and particularly small business.
We will continue to push for more and better bus services, more trains, dedicated cycleways and green pathways to link suburbs for walking and running.
Maitland Greens recognise the congestion on our roads today. That is why we have committed to finishing the Maitland railway roundabout by adding an east-west overpass. The current situation is chaotic and has led to "rat-runs" through Maitland Park which is not acceptable.
We are committed to putting more resources into eradicating domestic violence in our city. Carrie's Place needs more government funding.
Finally, I will represent our community's values in parliament and hold the major parties to account. Together we can create a fairer and cleaner future for all of us.
NEIL TURNER
One Nation
I see things in my own neighbourhood that can and should be done better. This region is the powerhouse of New South Wales; finances generated here push forward many projects in the state, however little is spent here.
Vast suburbs are being created with little thought of traffic congestion. We should be planning more effectively.
Due to the projected growth of more than 12,000 new dwellings in the next 15 years, the need for more schools and a new hospital should be in the construction phase by now.
I believe policies of One Nation do strike a chord with people. The quicker we get people elected to office the more we can make change happen.
I've lived in the Hunter region for nine years and work in the mining industry as a fitter machinist.
I feel let down that after our electricity network was privatised and sold off, we now have to pay more for electricity and our manufacturing sector is under more stress.
I would like to find better ways of dealing with family breakups and the senseless financial costs imposed on people. Plus, get youth more engaged in social and community activities.
I'm a fixer and a builder. I would like to bring the brightest minds together - young and old - to find innovative ways to help Maitland thrive.
AMY JOHNSON
Animal Justice Party
Animal Justice Party (AJP) is for voters who care for animals and want to see them better protected in our society. Amy will advocate for banning cruel puppy farms and pet shop animal sales. She will protect farmed animals from heat stress by presenting a bill for mandatory shade for all farmed animals. She will establish an inquiry into kangaroo slaughter, banning animals used in circuses, installing CCTV cameras and fire sprinklers in all abattoirs and intensive farms.
Amy will advocate for setting a renewable energy target, and the banning of logging in native forests in order to protect wildlife and create a stable and healthy environment for future generations. Amy is passionate about equality and safety in areas such as gun use, violence, health, education and mental health.
AJP is for voters who are disillusioned by major parties and want to give their vote to the animals. AJP is the only political party whose primary objective is advocating for strong laws against animal cruelty.
AJP has core values of kindness, equality, rationality and non violence that are always applied to make decisions on all legislation including human and the environmental laws. AJP will make sure their core values are part of the political and legal system.
With their core values, a vote for the animals is a safe and effective vote for you.
SAM FERGUSON
Sustainable Australia Party
I grew up in the Upper Hunter Valley and attended school in the Maitland region.
Having lived in several countries I have witnessed the impacts of rapid population growth rates on housing, transport and the environment.
When I returned to live and work in Maitland in 2016 I recognised the challenges facing the region, such as poorly planned development, inadequate transport infrastructure and worsening air quality.
My family and I enjoy the quality of life in the Hunter region, but like others we struggle with over-crowded roads, hospitals and public services.
I joined Sustainable Australia as their centrist policies are needed for us to move beyond the left-right duopoly that divides us and prevents real progress.
Policies such as simplifying the tax code to reduce corporate tax avoidance, and support manufacturing and small business.
If elected I will put the public interest before politics. I will respect the will of the electorate and work with the government to guarantee stability, while holding them to account and delivering for the electorate of Maitland.
We will prioritise education and skills training of Australian citizens, and not let agricultural land or infrastructure like ports be sold to foreign entities.
It is time for a discussion about the ideal population for Australia and NSW, and to decide it based on quality of life and environmental impacts, not just GDP growth.

NADRRA SARKIS
Shooters, Fisher and Farmers
I am a local who has had a gutful of this Government's priorities. Life does exist north of Sydney and it's time our community received the same level of services afforded to those in the city.
This Government has a proven track record of shutting down industries.
They tried it with the greyhound racing industry, and they have closed regional TAFE campuses across the state.
While this Government rubber stamps billion-dollar Sydney stadiums and museums, our hospitals are understaffed, we need more teachers, and we need more police resources.
I want to represent you and ensure that the electorate of Maitland gets its fair share.
