The George, who were last year's runners-up, have had a disrupted start to the season this year after losing several key players and forfeiting their round 5 match against Hills Solicitors.
But the Thornton side were back to their old form on Saturday, taking the match out by six points.
It was the bigger of two upsets in round seven - the other being Nexus Power Comets beating Club Maitland City in a two goal thriller.
The teams were sitting fourth and fifth on the ladder before the clash - CMC in the higher spot - but the Coalfields side weren't too confident of a win after injuries affected their starting seven.
The Comets led by as many as 11 before CMC clawed their way back into the game and looked like they could go on to victory. But Coalfields held on to win 46-44.
Despite the loss, CMC have gone up a spot on the ladder. A 61-34 loss for Customs House Hotel bumped them from third to fourth based on goal difference.
The Comets maintain their fifth place spot, but are currently on equal points with CMC and Customs House.
While they weren't able to get close to the undefeated Hills Solicitors, Customs House can take some satisfaction out of being the only team to get within 30 points of Hills now every team has played each other.
Tolsaf Cranes had the bye.
The competition will go back to the first week fixture this Saturday as the second half of the season commences, before all teams have a week off on the long weekend for the representative state championship tournament.
