Now, the much-loved Shawshank Redemption (along with main characters Andy and Red) will be breaking out again on the local screen for the film's 25th anniversary.
And it's happening somewhere very different from your usual movie cinema. In fact, Maitland Gaol will be transformed into an outdoor cinema in September.
Delivery officer Zoe Whiting said the highly anticipated event would offer a different experience and will be adult only.
"It's been 25 years since Shawshank Redemption has been released and it is a celebration of that in a very unique space
"I can't think of a more unique space than watching a movie about breaking out of jail than inside a jail.
"It's a way to experience the site different and It's something we haven't done for a really long time.
"We already had 1500 people register interest through our website so we are expecting this to be very popular."
The screening will be held on Saturday, September 21 with gates open at 6pm and the movie commencing at 7pm.
Ms Whiting said people were encouraged to bring their own blankets, bean bags or chairs to sit on.
"We will project the movie onto the wall in the exercise field so it will be huge," she said.
"There will also be food vans and the Pourhouse will be bringing a pop-up bar inside for people which is why its an over 18s event. People can also bring their own food but not drinks.
"We are encouraging people to come along and have a great time."
There will be a sausage sizzle, food vans, popcorn and sweets available on the night.
Tickets are $25 per person and on sale from 9.30am on Thursday, June 13.
"Shawkshank Redemption is one of the best prison movies of all time. It has a cult following and the fact that it's hard to believe its been 25 years," Ms Whiting added.
"We are expecting the phones to be running hot on Thursday."
The iconic prison has a jam packed schedule with the Winter Warmer on June 19 and Solstice Slumber: Sleepover on June 21.
