A spokesperson for Hunter Water said ground movement caused by changing weather patterns may be a factor in both incidents - the most recent closing High Street, Maitland early Sunday morning.
"Unfortunately leaks and breaks are an unavoidable issue for water utilities around the world and can be caused by a range of factors including soil movement, changes in the weather or seasons, trees and heavy road traffic," the spokesperson said.
"While the exact cause of two recent main breaks in the Maitland area are still being investigated, ground movement caused by the prolonged dry conditions followed by cold and wet weather, is likely a contributing factor.
"Hunter Water sincerely apologises to our customers for any disruption or inconvenience caused by the breaks," the spokesperson said.
"We have crews working around-the-clock, seven days a week to respond to and safely repair all leaks and breaks as soon as possible."
Hunter Water responded to a break on a 100mm water main on Cessnock Road, Gillieston Heights on Tuesday, June 4.
Crews completed repairs by 9am.
One northbound lane remained closed to traffic throughout the morning while the road was repaired.
In the second incident, Hunter Water responded to a break on a 250mm water main on High Street, Maitland on Monday, June 10.
The break occurred just before 4am.
"Our customer care team is working with the owners of two businesses and a car, which were impacted by the break," the spokesperson said.
