The five positions will all be general duties officers, made up of four constables and one sergeant.

Port Stephens-Hunter commander Superintendent Craig Jackson said the officers would come from the next class to graduate from the Goulburn Police Academy in August.

Supt Jackson said it had not yet been decided where the new officers would be based.

"We're in the process of working that out," he said.

But the commander believes that wherever they work from, the new officers are set to be a "boon for the district".

"It's going to make a big difference," Supt Jackson said.

"It will give us that ability to provide a better service to the community."

NSW Police Force Commissioner Mick Fuller said the new positions will be created in the areas most in need.

"These fully funded positions are the resource boost we need to continue to drive down crime and protect the community," Commissioner Fuller said.

"Positions are being placed in the areas most in need across the state. We will see more officers in police area commands and police districts as well as in specialist commands, such as our Strategic Intelligence, Rural Crime and Cyber Crime Squads.

"By 2023, we will have a child protection register coordinator and aged crime prevention officer at each police area command and police district across the state.

"We know we will face emerging threats in the future. With the structure in place and our strong position, we'll be able to allocate resources where they'll make the greatest difference."

Port Stephens-Hunter was one of 23 districts and local area commands to receive an allocation from the 450, which is the first rollout of a plan to increase the NSW Police Force by 1500 officers by 2023.

Neighbouring district Hunter Valley, which includes Cessnock, Singleton and Muswellbrook, will receive 11 more officers, the equal largest allocation in the state. Newcastle City will receive six extra police, while five will also join Lake Macquarie.
