Grug was created by Novocastrian author and illustrator Ted Prior and first published in 1979.
The first book in the series tells how Grug came to life, when lightning struck the top of a Burrawang Tree. The grassy top fell off and became Grug, who then set off to find himself a home. He met some Aussie bush friends along the way and has had 33 adventures with friends Cara and Snoot since.
Grug will appear at Morpeth Gallery on Saturday and Sunday, and Prior will also be in residence to sign Grug books, which will be available for sale at $6 each.
To celebrate Grug's 40th birthday, a special edition hard back book and plush Grug toy set is being released at $25.
Attendees can enjoy the colouring-in station, eat birthday party food, admire the original artworks for the stories and watch Grug come to life on the TV screen.
