Aspiring poets will have the chance to hone their poetry writing and performance skills at a Hunter Poetry Slam workshop at The Bikesmith & Espresso Bar this week.
The workshop, held on Wednesday, is one of six to be held across the region including those in Newcastle, Muswellbrook, Scone, Singleton and Wallsend.
Manager Gallery and Libraries Keryl Collard said the organisation is pleased to partner with Hunter Poetry Slam in the expansion of the workshops.
"We have a high population of creatives in Maitland, so this is a wonderful opportunity for budding poets to refine their skills, with the chance to move on to further poetry slam competitions," she said.
Following the workshops, six Hunter Poetry Slam heats will be held in September - culminating in the Hunter Regional Heat, before two competitors progress to the NSW Final.
A poetry slam is a unique event where poets are given a microphone, a live audience and just two minutes to impress the judges with their original poetry, stories, or whatever they do with their words.
The judges are chosen randomly from the crowd.
"Developing creative skills, networks and confidence is the foundation of the Hunter Poetry Slam program," Program Manager Christina Robberds added.
"Our region is full of amazing creatives and these workshops will help poets hone their skills and give them a better chance to ultimately win the Australian Poetry Slam National Final at the Sydney Opera House as part of Story-Fest 2019."
Bookings for this free workshop at The Bikesmith & Espresso Bar on Wednesday from 4.30pm until 6.30pm are essential and can be made online at maitlandlibrary.com.au.
