Crews were successful in containing the blaze along the rail line near Clark Street.
At 3.40pm on Wednesday, crews were mopping up the area.
There is no threat to life or property.
NSW Rural Fire Service Lower Hunter coordinator Bert Pipan said the fire's cause was unknown.
He encouraged people to remain careful and vigilant around fires regardless of the season.
"Be mindful of weather conditions," he said.
"I know we're still in winter but [it's important to] not be complacent when lightning fires."
