Kurri Kurri Speedway didn't escape the icy blast that swept through the Hunter on the weekend resulting in club officials shortening the scheduled race program.
While the morning program for junior 125 solos on the inner track ran its full number of events, the afternoon program for senior solos, senior sidecars and junior 250 solos was reduced to three rounds of heats and an A Final.
"The constant strong westerly winds not only meant a tough test for riders, it also meant that our track
staff needed to carry out track preparation well beyond normal," said race secretary Maree Dall.
"In the best interest for everyone, the call was made to cancel two rounds of heats with all results to stand," she added.
Cessnock's Alan Macdonald returned to form, winning all three of his qualifying heats in the Senior A
Grade division to secure a spot in the A Final. However, Mason Campton kept his unbeaten A Final record intact, finishing ahead of Cessnock's Isaac Hawes and Macdonald.
The win kept Campton at the top of the Series table and Hawes' second place kept him in the top three in the overall series standings.
It was a disappointing outing for newly crowned Queensland Under 21 speedway solo champion Declan Kennedy. Two second places from three qualifying heats meant that Kennedy missed the B Final and the chance to firm up his overall standing in the Series.
Young Queensland rider Flynn Nicol and Kurri Kurri youngster Cameron Dunker battled out the honours in the Junior 125 solo division.
Nicol recently competed in the FIM 2019 World Youth 250 Speedway Solo Championship in Denmark where he finished seventh.
Not to be deterred by Nicol's international performances, Dunker proved to be a tough opponent. Both riders finished with maximum points from their qualifying rides and then faced each other in a match race to decide top spot for the A Final.
Nicol won the 'ride off' and maintained his unbeaten record by defeating Dunker in the A Final.
The penultimate round of the Kurri Kurri Speedway Club Championship and the Craig Boyce
Speedway Experience Winter Series will be held at Kurri Kurri Speedway on Saturday 14 September 2019.
