Police were called to Pepler Place about 12.45pm on Thursday amid concern for the welfare of residents inside a home.
It is alleged a man was outside the property with a gun before he began to pour petrol over the front door and threatened to light a fire.
He ran from police, jumping over a back fence and dashing into bushland.
Port Stephens Hunter Police District officers began a search that included PolAir and the dog unit, scouring bushland and numerous residences. They were unable to find the man.
Following extensive inquiries, they arrested a 27-year-old man at a Cassia Way property at Metford about 9.45pm on Friday evening.
He was taken to Maitland police station and charged with stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (personal), armed with intent to commit indictable offence, possess unauthorised firearm, and in relation to an outstanding arrest warrant.
