It comes after council's application for $51 million in infrastructure within the Thornton Precinct was unsuccessful.

Liberal councillor Mitchell Griffin moved an amendment and asked for a report on the council's options to address the traffic issue around the precinct.

"It was disappointing to see we weren't successful in the grant in this area. This is a major issue [for Thornton]," Cr Griffin said.

"We need to have something that goes out with a clear plan as to where we are heading to this road infrastructure."

Works would've included the upgrade of Weakleys and Glenwood Drive roundabout; upgrade of Glenwood Drive between Weakleys Drive and Thornton Road; upgrade of Thornton Road to four traffic lanes 500 metres north of Glenwood Drive; construction of traffic signals at the intersections of Thornton Road with Glenwood Drive and Huntingdale Drive; and duplication of bridge on Thornton Road.

However Labor councillor Robert Aitchison, the only councillor against the motion.

"Of course every councillor supports the state funding to reduce the congestion of these dangerous roads, it is a disgrace that the Liberals and Nationals promised zero funding for Maitland roads at the last election," he told the Mercury on Friday.

"My concern is that council staff should not be tasked with restating the issue, rather they should be focusing on sourcing new funding avenues to address it."
