Coordinator Kattie Bugeja said the 2020-2025 strategic framework aimed to engage the community in determining the direction of the gallery.
"Maitland Regional Art Gallery is a community facility ... we are here to serve the community of Maitland and its visitors," she said.
"We always want to be diverse, and look at different ways of working with artists and engaging with our audiences.
"We can't do it without community input. We want to know what Maitland wants and needs from the gallery."
As part of the feedback process, Council will be targeting key groups including young people, people with disability, Aboriginal people and people from cultural and linguistically diverse communities.
It will be looking to identify the barriers to participation, visitation and access to the gallery, and its programs and services.
This consultation is an extension of MRAG's annual visitor survey and MRAG members survey.
Phase one of the project will include interviews with representatives from key stakeholder groups and organisations.
There will also be a council stall for residents to give their feedback at the Riverlights Multicultural Festival on Saturday, October 12.
"We will also be popping up at Green Hills and Rutherford Market Place. We are trying to reach as many people as we can possible in the next couple of months," Ms Bugeja said.
Feedback will be used to improve access and drive greater involvement with the gallery, its programs and integration with the Maitland community.
