The unit, which is the first stage in the hospital's vision for a larger cancer centre, includes four treatment chairs and be directed by Dr Robin Paterson.
Dr Paterson said there were already plans underway for the expansion of the new unit.
"We will be able to help over 60 patients every week," he said. "It will make a big difference. The Hunter and New England region is under serviced and we hope this will go a long way."
The hospital's unit will also provide a link for patients with the Cancer Council.
Community Programs Coordinator Glen Parsons said the organisation would be working with Maitland Private Hospital's new oncology service to close the gap in the Hunter region.
"We will compliment the service with our free transport to treatment and assist cancer patients and carers with home services, legal and counselling," he said.
"I thank the hospital for what they are trying to do."
