East Maitland Griffins are hoping to start their first ladies league team next season - all they need are players.
"This is something we want to get off the ground," said Gary Greenwood, a former club president who has taken it upon himself to get the team started.
"We tried to get it up and running last season but it was a last minute thing and we couldn't get the numbers.
"In the end when it looked like we would run out of time, the couple of players we did have went and played for other teams.
"So this year we're giving ourselves a lot more time to get things organised and we already have a couple of sponsors in place.
"And Darren Wright, who is coming back to coach our All Age team this year, has agreed to coach the women's side to start with, so that's in place too.
"Talk of an East Maitland ladies team seems to have generated a lot of interest and chatter on social media, so now we just need to get the players together."
Ironically the first training run was scheduled for Tuesday - the 'catastrophic' bushfire day - when the smoke meant air quality around Maitland was so poor that the club decided to call it off for health safety reasons.
"Training will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm, and then there will be the match day on weekends," Greenwood said.
"All we need is a few players to start and others will follow. They might even have friends who want to come along and work as volunteers around the club. You can't have too many of them."
Greenwood said women's rugby league has really taken off and he feels it is important the Griffins follow suit.
"East Maitland Griffins is great club," he said. "I first came here about 10 years back and since then have done everything ... club president, media person, cook, washer upper, ballboy ... you name it.
"And for years we have seen the women come along to support the men.
"Well now it's their turn. Can you imagine a home game where you have the ladies in action before the men. It would be terrific."
