Mark Tunney, 34, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to enter dwelling with intent to steal in Maitland Local Court last week.
A mother with a young child had found Tunney in the kitchen of her Rutherford home. After being caught, he quickly fled the premises with her Apple Notebook.
But police were able to track the stolen laptop down thanks to the Find My Mac app, which pointed them to George Street, Telarah.
Further inquiries led police to a home on Gillies Street where they arrested Tunney.
He was charged with enter dwelling with intent to steal and larceny, the latter of which was later withdrawn.
Appearing before Magistrate John Chicken on November 27, Tunney was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 12 months.
