The play space and fitness equipment is located next to the new half court and there is also a shelter and picnic tables soon to be completed.
Council's recreation works operation manager Caine James said the play space would be a valuable asset to the Rutherford community.
"We've spent about $195,000 as part of our capital work's program," he said.
"The guys have done a fantastic job on the installation and design.
"It's great for the city to have as many as these play spaces as we can but also the upgrades make sure they meet the current standards."
Earlier this year, Maitland City Council also officially completed $3.4 million worth of works on Abbot Street which encompassed a 400 metre reconstruction from High Street to Rose Street.
