Police were called to the scene of a bushfire near Greta Street, Aberdare, about 11pm where they saw a man emerging from bushland covered in soot.
Officers spoke with the man and arrested him, before he was taken to hospital for assessment.
After he was released from hospital, the man was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with two counts of intentionally causing fire and being reckless as to its spread.
Police will allege in court the man deliberately lit two fires in bushland - one about 3.30pm near Cessnock Road, Neath, and the second near Greta Street, Aberdare, about 11pm.
He was granted conditional bail and will face Cessnock Local Court on January 29.
