Hunter New England Health (HNEH) Chief Executive Michael DiRienzo has welcomed 125 new doctors to the district - part of a group of 1027 new interns starting work in hospitals across the state.
"Interns are a vital part of the professional team at the frontline of the health system," Mr DiRienzo said.
"We are very happy to greet this new team of enthusiastic and talented doctors who want to make a difference, and develop their skills in the public health system."
He said the new interns will be employed across seven of the district's hospitals, and within the HNE Mental Health team.
The NSW Government is investing $107 million in the internship program this year and since 2011, intern positions in NSW have increased by 257 or 33 per cent.
Graduates complete compulsory terms in the specialties of medicine, surgery and emergency as required by the Medical Board of Australia. Interns rotate through a network of metropolitan, regional or rural hospitals, children's services and mental health.
Mr DiRienzo is pleased so many have chosen to complete their post graduate training at facilities within HNELHD.
"Hunter New England Health is an attractive employer because we are able to offer staff a wonderful balance of lifestyle and professional opportunities unmatched by many other health services across Australia," he said.
A total of 102 interns have begun orientation at the John Hunter Hospital this week and will go on to work at Belmont, Calvary Mater Newcastle, Maitland and Manning hospitals and the mental health service.
