The richest harness racing meeting north of Sydney is set to return to Newcastle Harness Racing Club on Friday, February 21.
The Group 1 $100,000 AVE Technologies Newcastle Mile is not only Newcastle Harness Racing Club's premier race night, it is an automatic qualifier for the $1million Miracle Mile at Club Menangle on Saturday, March 7.
Last year's event, contested in difficult conditions after a delay due to a thunderstorm and torrential rain, was won by rank outsider Yayas Hot Spot.
Organisers are hoping for a clear night this year but will there be another surprise in the winner's circle? Entries are expected to come in from interstate and New Zealand to take part in the qualifying event.
Former Miss Universe Australia and reality TV star Tegan Martin will return as ambassador in 2020. Look out for her at the photo wall on arrival along with volunteers from the John Hunter Children's Hospital Kids Club who will be selling 'smiles' and raffle tickets to raise money for much needed equipment and resources for the John Hunter Children's Hospital. The prize in the major raffle is a $2000 travel voucher from italk Travel, Warners Bay.
The fundraising effort continues a more than 20 year relationship between Newcastle Harness Racing Club and the children's hospital.
Martin will also be hosting the inaugural Tots at the Trots fashion comp for boys and girls aged three to eight years. This is a fun opportunity for kids to dress up, get creative and win a prize. Entry is free, but will be limited to the first 30 entrants.
There will be plenty of family-friendly entertainment on site. The Kids Zone will have face-painting, a balloon artist, jumping castle, roving characters and Ruby the Clown entertaining the kids. Mini Trots will also be racing.
Bobby C will be providing live music on the public concourse and the Power of Two Duo will entertain guests in Pacers Restaurant. The Marching Koalas will also perform.
As always, Pacers Restaurant will be offering the best seats in the house in the glass grandstand. Bookings are essential. Easy meals are also available in the Ross Gigg lounge and the canteen, and there will be a sausage sizzle on the public concourse.
Entry to the event is free with gates to open at approximately 5.30pm. To make a booking at Pacers Restaurant ring 4956 1750 and for more information visit www.newcastleharness.com.au.
