The initiative will be coming to the Maitland Show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 4pm.
Hunter Water is behind the display.
In an easy-t-grasp display, it shows how much water a person uses in a month if they have 4 minute showers. Another shows how much water is used if having 10 minute showers.
According to Hunter Water statistics the average household in the Lower Hunter uses 473 buckets of water each week. That's equivalent to 4703 litres.
"We know that it's hard to comprehend how much water we all really use in the house," community engagement coordinator Janita Klein said.
"The buckets are really tangible, they represent scarcity. Hopefully we can take these out to the community and they can really get a sense of what they are using."
Ms Klein said the display would hopefully entice families to look at ways they could save even more water.
The project was designed as a way to educate residents about water restrictions. It came after dam levels were the lowest they had been in decades.
Level 2 water restrictions have been in place since January and are ongoing, despite widespread rain over the past few days.
