The masters part of the exhibition comprises 21 artworks from the Lakeview Collection of Old Masters which includes works by artists such as Francisco Goya, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt Van Rijn, Marc Chagall and Joan Miro.
To complement these works and to provide creative input from budding 'apprentices', students from local primary and high schools were invited to make artworks responding to selected artworks from the Lakeview Collection.
Gallery coordinator Kattie Bugeja said the exhibition opened on February 8.
"This exhibition sprung out of the idea of the traditional master and apprentice relationship," she said.
"Some of the students have taken heed of that traditional relationship and tried to copy the work like-for-like, while other artists have taken the work as inspiration.
"Creative learning is a huge focus for Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
"We absolutely love working with local schools and students as well as giving them an opportunity to create and be exhibited on the gallery walls.
"We are always blown away by the creativity and quality of local students."
The works from the 'masters' include lithographs, etchings, etchings with aquatint and serigraphs.
An official launch for Masters and Apprentices will be held on Saturday, February 29 at Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
