Organisers expect 10-12,000 people to flock to the city for the 2020 Tiny House Festival Australia.

Tiny Houses Australia founder Darren Hughes said small-scale living gave people more flexibility with their lives, relieving them of a massive mortgage

He said people were realising that life was more than working to pay rent, or a mortgage, sparking the popularity of the tiny house movement.

"Housing prices are going through the roof. People are getting more and more in debt, people are stressed," Mr Hughes said.

"If you don't have a massive mortgage hanging over your head you've got more flexibility. You can choose what job you want to do.

"At the end of the day the house is simply a tool. It's a tool people can use to design the life and lifestyle they really want."

Mr Hughes said double the number of tiny houses, and different types of tiny houses, would be on display at the Bendigo festival.

He said four times the number of exhibitors had signed up than the previous year, with five of the biggest names in tiny houses.

Three stages will be running back to back with speakers all weekend.

But you don't have to be dreaming of a tiny-home to enjoy the festival. Even lovers of standard size dwellings can find inspiration in the tiny house movement.

Mr Hughes said even people in a normal house situation could take steps to reduce the number of unnecessary items they owned, to make their space feel more open and airy.
