They are not alone. Real estate agents across the city are dealing with storm damage in a number of rental properties and say that list could grow if more bad weather hits the city.
River Realty has 11 rental properties with damage, including Josie Wright's home at Metford.
The mother-of-two came home from work late on Monday night to find her rental home in Cedar Close had been flooded from the shower drain while her children and partner were sleeping.
The next day her insurance company inspected the damage and found the flood had been a combination of sewerage and stormwater.
They had to leave straight away and have been in emergency accommodation ever since. Their small dog has been living with a relative.
"The smell is getting worse and worse, it's horrendous now - you can't even go near the front door without smelling it," Ms Wright said.
"We've had to leave everything behind because it's all contaminated. I took a couple of clothes with us and I've washed them three times and they still smell."
The family had been renting the 3 bedroom house through River Realty for the past four years. They leased it after their home in Phoenix Park went up in flames.
The landlord's insurance will deal with the damage to the building and Ms Wright's lease has been terminated because the home is uninhabitable.
The family has been encouraged to apply for other rental properties.
Ms Wright wants to stay in Metford as her eldest daughter, Ava, started kindergarten at Metford Public School earlier this month.
River Realty doesn't have any suitable properties in that suburb.
"We don't have anything suitable for what she's after in the area that she is after. We have asked her to widen her scope of where she is looking across all agencies," River Realty Director and Head of Property Management Dee Martin said.
"We have visited every single site that was affected by the storms. There are a lot of other tenants that have issues and we're doing everything we can to get the insurance companies in there as quickly as possible.
"Our response from the insurance companies at the moment is that they are trying to make good, but with the bushfires, hail and storms there is a massive amount of damage."
Ms Martin said Ms Wright's home was the only one that had been contaminated by sewerage.
"The rest has been saturated carpet from water. We have had dryers in two properties that only had carpet in the front room saturated and the rest of them had bigger houses so they could move into the back of the house while the carpet got replaced in the front areas," she said.
Ms Martin said Ms Wright always paid her rent on time and she would provide a reference.
"I'm applying for everything I can," Ms Wright said.
