Rick was involved in the Cessnock District Cricket Association as both a player and umpire for the past 40 years.
He first started playing in the area for the Chelmsford Hotel before getting together with his mates in the 1984/85 season to kick start the Mulbring Cricket Club which had folded some years before.
They started the 1984/85 season with a second and third grade team. Mulbring won the second grade competition the same season with Rick opening the batting for Mulbring.
Rick was heavily involved in re-building the Mulbring Cricket Club and moved up to first grade where he played during the '80s and '90s with a batting average of 26.00.
He was also involved in the Cessnock District representative team for more than 10 years during this period.
In 1996 he decided to play in the lower grades to mentor the Mulbring juniors.
Such was his love for the sport and his mates, that rather than just retire from cricket, Rick decided to try his hand at umpiring by sitting the NSW Umpires course in the 2006/07 season in which he was successful.
He went on the umpire many first grade finals, John Bull and Hunter Valley Representative matches.
His funeral was held at the Mulbring Uniting Church last Wednesday, where past and present umpires and club representatives from across the district attended to pay their respects.
