Maitland's Steamfest, which was scheduled to be held next month, has been cancelled due to the Australian Government's "non-essential" gathering ban and coronavirus fears.

Maitland City Council issued a statement confirming the two-day events cancellation on Monday.
"In light of Australian Government recommendation, Maitland City Council as organiser of Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest, has made the decision to cancel the event in 2020," a statement said.
"Council supports the advice provided by the Australian Government and as such has made the decision with the health and safety of the community as its top priority.
"Due to the fluid nature of the required response to COVID-19, the 2020 event will not be postponed to a later date."
It is the second council event cancelled in Maitland with the weekend's Taste Festival axed following the Australian Government's ban on "non-essential" gatherings.
"The 2020 event was shaping up to be great one, with significant interest around the return of 3801," the statement said.
"However Council and the Steamfest Working Group will now turn their attention to developing an extraordinary program of activities for next year's event, which will celebrate the 35th anniversary of Steamfest.
"Council would like to acknowledge the support of event stakeholders including major sponsor Burton Automotive, businesses within the Maitland area, the Maitland Steam and Antique Machinery Association, Show 'n' Shine community, stallholders, community groups, volunteers and staff, and look forward to delivering the best event possible in 2021."
