It comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced, on Sunday night, new measures in response to COVID-19 which include the immediate closure of some public facilities including skate parks and outdoor playgrounds.
The new restrictions also ban public gatherings of more than two people, excluding household members.
"We understand this may be disappointing, the closures have occurred in accordance with Australian Government advice and in the best interest of the health and safety of our community," Council's Community and Recreation manager Laurie D'Angelo said.
"Although all play equipment at 75 parks across Maitland is now closed, our parks are currently open for exercise provided social distancing rules are observed."
Council meetings will continue without a public presence but there have been a number of council facilities closed to slow the spread of coronavirus.
Closed facilities include Maitland City Library branches, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Maitland Gaol, Maitland Aquatic Centres, Maitland Visitor Information Centre and all public community halls.
Last month, NSW Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock announced all local government elections across the state pushed back by 12-months to September 2021.
