A combination of the cheapest world oil prices in almost 18 years and a lack of fuel demand due to the coronavirus has created good news at the petrol pump for Maitland drivers.

The average price of unleaded fuel in Maitland sat at $1.159 on Friday - the lowest it had been in almost three years.
NRMA spokesperson Bridget Ahern said across the state, some prices were as low as 80 cents per litre, with one place even offering fuel for 49 cents at one point.

Here in the Hunter, prices have dipped below the $1 mark with a service station at Waratah offering E10 fuel for 99 cents a litre on Friday.
Ms Ahern said prices had dropped across the board because of an overproduction in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) market.
She said OPEC nations were currently at odds, which had led to an oversupply of fuel.
"Which is good news for drivers," Ms Ahern said.
This was further exacerbated by a lack of demand from aircraft and motor vehicles due to the coronavirus keeping people from travelling.
"If you look up in the sky, there aren't as many planes flying around," Ms Ahern said.
"People aren't moving around as much so they don't need to fill up."
Ms Ahern said the NRMA was hopeful prices would stay low for the near future.
"World oil prices may go up, but things should stay pretty reasonable for the next few weeks," she said.
However, Ms Ahern said despite the low prices, there were still some variances between different service stations.
Drivers can view current fuel prices in the area on the NSW Government's Fuel Check website.
"If you need to go to Newcastle for something, you can be paying 20 cents per litre difference so it pays to check out the prices first."
