Port Stephens-Hunter police and the police dog attended the Rutherford residence at 11.20am on Tuesday to make the outstanding arrest.
As they approached, police said a dog at the residence attacked the police canine and its handler prompting police to shoot the occupant's dog.
Police were preparing to take the dog to the vet for treatment, but it died from its injuries.
