With the doors to the historic site closed for the duration of the COVID-19 restrictions, Maitland Gaol has reworked its usual children's activities and created some fun online resources guided by the ghostly character 'Snitch the Rat' to entertain kids at home these school holidays.
For those familiar with the Gaol site, Snitch the Rat is the voice of the children's self guided audio tours, and he comes to life in the newly launched 'Snitch's Spot' on the Maitland Gaol website.
Snitch leads kids and parents through fun activities like making real butter and liquid hand soap. Printable activity sheets are also available, and more will be added in the coming weeks.
"It's fantastic that we are able to engage with the community in new ways during this unprecedented time in our history," Maitland Gaol coordinator Gordon Sauber said.
"Opening up the online resources is the perfect way to provide parents and kids with fun things to do and learning opportunities while they are at home over the school break."
Children can go on an audio adventure through the cells with Snitch, and activities will be announced via Snitch's Scoop weekly newsletter.
Download the Maitland Gaol app and listen to Snitch tell the secrets of the gaol that he witnessed as the many criminals were brought in from the outside world.
Snitch also loves to have a chat and kids are encouraged to send letters and emails with stories and drawings to Snitch at snitch@maitlandgaol.com.au.
He will respond to as many as possible. Snitch's Spot can be found by visiting maitlandgaol.com.au/snitchs-spot.
