As Australians stood at their driveways with lit candles on Saturday morning, they were apart physically, but united in remembrance.
People across the Hunter participated in the special commemorative Light Up The Dawn event.
Residents along Brunker Road observed the day with reverence, with chattering birds and the echoes of broadcasts from Canberra the only break in the morning peace.
Slowly the streets were lined, dressing gowns alongside dress uniforms, as balconies and driveways replaced the traditional venues of commemoration.
Shortly after 6am, the small gatherings quietly dispersed back behind closed doors with little fanfare.
