It is expected to remain closed for six months, along with The Junction and Wallsend branches.
The Mercury contacted the Pender Place branch and were assured that all equipment will be remaining on site and that the ATM will continue to operate.
"The plan is to reopen when things are back to normal," a spokesperson said. "It's just that there will be no face to face service.
"The other Commonwealth Bank branches in Maitland are unaffected and will continue operating as normal."
The closure of the Maitland branch is part of a major streamlining of Commonwealth Bank operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
All up, 114 CBA branches will close across the country as foot traffic has fallen significantly, compounded by social distancing regulations.
It is understood where possible the bank will move branch staff to call centres to deal with the increase in calls from people seeking financial assistance during the pandemic.
The closure is the second Pender Place bank to close.
The Greater Bank also shut its doors recently.
A simple note on its website reads:
"This branch is closed. Please visit another branch. We have closed our Maitland branch temporarily, in the interest of customer and staff safety, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will re-open as soon as possible."
