Martin Dennis Papworth appeared in court on Wednesday charged with two counts of police pursuit, two counts of driving while disqualified, escaping police custody and two counts of possession of a prohibited drug. Papworth, who only last week failed to appear in Maitland Local Court for an ammunition possession charge and was dealt with in his absence, was sentenced to a maximum of 22 months in jail, with a non-parole period of 14 months.
He will be eligible for parole in July, 2021.
Papworth was behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla that stopped briefly for highway patrol officers on Adelaide Street at Raymond Terrace about 3pm on Friday before accelerating away.
Police gave chase and Papworth's Toyota reached speeds of about 140km/h in a 50km/h zone. The Toyota stopped on Charles Street and Papworth fled on foot and disappeared.
On Sunday about 11pm, Papworth was again behind the wheel of a Hyundai Santa Fe that officers attempted to stop in Raymond Terrace Road, Chisholm for a random breath test.
When the Hyundai failed to stop, police initiated a pursuit that sped through Thornton and Millers Forster, again reaching speeds of 140km/h.
The Hyundai eventually stopped at a home in Woodberry, where Papworth was arrested.
