Now, due to continuing high demand, the drive-through COVID-19 testing clinic at Cessnock District Hospital has been extended until further notice.

Cessnock MP Clayton Barr described the decision as great news for residents who would otherwise have to travel outside the region to be tested.

Despite its busy schedule, the Cessnock site has not registered a single positive test.

From May 20 to June 21 the facility conducted more than 2,260 tests in total.

Of those, 804 tests were conducted during May (May 20 to May 31) with the remainder in June (June 1 to June 21).

The testing will continue to operate from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. To be tested residents must book an appointment by calling (02) 4964 7497 (a new phone number as of August 16).

"With more and more restrictions easing over the coming weeks and months it is incredibly important for all community members to be following health advice, have a test if you have any symptoms, wash your hands regularly and be practicing social distancing," Mr Barr said.

"As the cold weather comes leaving people more vulnerable to viruses and the easing of restrictions we need to not become complacent.

"The recent rise in cases in Victoria is a red flag to residents in NSW that we need to remain on guard for COVID-19.

"I encourage anyone with symptoms, even mild ones, or those who want or need to be tested to call and book an appointment. You may need to be patient as the clinic is receiving a high volume of calls."

Mr Barr had campaigned for a testing facility to be part of either Cessnock or Kurri Kurri Hospitals to ensure residents in the Cessnock local government area had a testing facility they could access without having to go out of the area.
