"It would be about 15 weeks," Reading Cinemas Maitland manager Yvette Cavanagh estimated her complex had been closed.
"I think it was on March 24 ... we were one of the first businesses to close."
But after the long delay they're back this week, along with Hoyts at Green Hills.
In both cinemas social distancing requirements are still in place.
"From our point of view, we have four auditoriums, and the biggest can hold about 50 people while we adhere to social distancing," Ms Cavanagh said.
"We would strongly encourage people to book online. When you book you can pick your seat and that automatically blocks out the seats immediately around it.
"For those who roll up without a booking, they will take their chances but we are going cashless for safety reasons, so payment will be via card only. And obviously with social distancing there are a lot less seats available."
Ms Cavanagh said they had received numerous posts of support from people who were missing their regular cinema visits.
"We have school holidays coming up so we expect to be busy," she said. "That's why we really encourage people to book online.
"We have a wide range of shows on offer. Being school holidays we have some kids movies and animation, but some retro stuff too, like Ghostbusters. And we have the Dark Knight Batman trilogy from Chris Nolan.
"We'll be mixing that with some stuff that had only just been released before COVID, and then we'll see the start of the blockbusters that had been held back.
"And the other big news is that we'll be hiring the cinema out for gaming nights. Bring your Playstation, Xbox or Switch, hook it up to the projectors with your mates, and play on the big screen with surround sound."
Up at Hoyts they will be operating at about 50 per cent capacity across their seven cinemas.
"We always sell out quickly anyway, but at 50 per cent and with school holidays, tickets won't last long so it would be wise to book," Hoyts Green Hills location manager Jarrod Mercer said.
"We're making a few changes. There will be extra time between screenings to allow for detailed cleaning of each cinema, we're having staggered start and finishing times so we'll only have one movie finishing at a time to allow people time to get in and out ... that sort of thing."
And the movies themselves?
"With school holidays we're having the first four Harry Potter movies in week one, and the next three Harry Potters in week two, we'll have some Quentin Tarantino stuff, some pre-Oscars releases, Ghostbusters ... and then the big new releases will be arriving.
"We're just so glad to be open again, it has been a long time."
