Maitland City Council is advising motorists to use alternative routes and keep watch on its social media and website for updates.
Community Engagement Officer with Maitland State Emergency Service Alexandra Varley has reminded residents that during heavy bursts of rain, localised flash flooding and a rise in river levels may be experienced.
"It is important that if roads (such as Melville Ford crossing) are flooded, that people take an alternate route," she said.
Showers are expected to ease on Wednesday.
