The Magpies learned on Saturday morning that the game with Olympic had been postponed as a precaution after concerns about possible links with under-18 and reserve grade players at Olympic and positive Covid-19 cases reported at St Pius X, Adamstown and St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton this week.
The Magpies are keen to avoid a schedule of games against three leading teams in seven days with home games against Lambton Jaffas on August 16, and Broadmeadow Magic on August 23, potentially sandwiching a mid-week fixture against Olympic.
Maitland understands the first grade game was postponed as a precaution and that there were no contacts between Olympics' senior team members and any positive cases.
The Magpies believe that rescheduling the match to this Wednesday or Thursday would pose no problems with isolation requirements and reduce scheduling difficulties for both clubs. A decision is expected on Monday afternoon.
Today's games between the Weston Bears and Charlestown Azzurri and Lake Macquarie City and Edgeworth are scheduled to proceed.
The game between Adamstown and Valentine was postponed after several Rosebud players across senior and youth teams were forced into a 14-day isolation.
However, the Broadmeadow Magic and Lambton Jaffas game went ahead with Magic coming from behind to record a 3-2 victory.
Maitland Mapgies football director Simon Rutherford said the Magpies supported the Northern NSW NPL's decision to postpone the three games given possible links with the junior players and the positive Covid-19 cases at two Newcastle Schools.
"As far as we know there were no links with the first grade team, but we can understand all precautions being taken in the circumstances," Rutherford said.
"We are hopeful that an possible contact has been with the lower ranks that we can have our first grade game rescheduled to this Wednesday or Thursday to avoid having three games against top teams in seven days."
Maitland sit in fifth place on the NPL ladder with two wins and two losses from their four games. The Magpies lost midweek to Weston Bears after being reduced to 10 men in the 37th minute. The Bears are fourth with seven points from two wins and a draw.
