Maitland councillors unanimously supported the $6 million development which will see the demolition of the existing Aldi on Garnett Road and the construction of a new one in its place.
"I was on council when this development was first put up," Independent councillor Peter Garnham said.
"It would be a good development and assist greatly with the traffic issues that are over there at the moment."

The development application detailed the construction a new raised retail shop with ground level car parking incorporating 94 car parking spaces.
Independent councillor Mike Yarrington also welcomed the upgrade of the 'busy' supermarket.
"Aldi has needed to upgrade the Green Hills store for a number of years. The store has become way too busy," he said.
"I'm happy to see it go ahead."
The new store will employ up to 25 employees.
Liberal councillor Kanchan Ranadive added the new store would continue to provide employment for the Maitland community.
"I'm really happy that a business like Aldi is happy to expand and keep investing into Maitland," she said.
"It shows businesses are having confidence in the growth of Maitland, and in turn the growth of jobs and employment opportunities for local people."
