The exhibition, Winning Isn't Everything: Maitland's Sporting History, aims to celebrate the city's 19th century sports and trace the rise of sporting clubs and their importance in our community into the 20th and 21st centuries.
It also celebrates the achievements of numerous Maitland sportspeople. Maitland Regional Museum president Janece McDonald said the exhibit was inspired by "Maitland's amazing sport history" which goes all the way back to the 1830s.
"We've had so many winners from world champions to Olympians - the works. But behind all those champions are the clubs and the people," she said. "So we thought we'd focus on the 19th century and how the sports developed, and then how the clubs developed."
From archery to rugby to boxing to horse racing, the exhibition covers a wide range of sports.
"We've included as many sports as we can including vigoro which started here in 1923," Ms McDonald said.
"Anyone who comes will find something they can relate to." The exhibit was developed in collaboration with Maitland Regional Museum, Easts Leisure and Golf Club and the Maitland Clothing Museum.
It will officially open on September 19 and run until December.
The museum, located at Brough House, is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm, and entry costs $5 per adult.
Groups can book in on week days by appointment with a maximum of 10 people.
