That Friday night is a chance for you to support people at risk of homelessness by taking part in the NSW Vinnies Community Sleepout.

And the best news is you can do it from your own car, backyard or couch as the state-wide event is livestreamed, hosted by television personality Deborah Knight .

Cr Loretta Baker, mayor of Maitland City Council, is urging locals throughout the Hunter get involved.

All funds raised from the Maitland event will be used to support people with food, clothing, household items, blankets whitegoods, financial aid, crisis accommodation and other assistance.

Across the Hunter, and specifically in the growing Maitland City area, the St Vincent de Paul Lower Hunter members provide financial assistance to people who are experiencing disadvantage.

A branch of St Vincent de Paul, Amelie Housing has built 17 units in Maitland in partnership with NSW Government under the Social and Affordable Housing Fund.

The money raised from the Vinnies Community Sleepout will assist the charity to continue to support people across the Hunter who are homeless; those on limited income such as Newstart or the Disability Pension; those who are struggling to pay rent or provide their families with the basic necessities, such as food and heating.
