A partnership between Destination NSW and ARIA, Great Southern Nights will deliver 1000 COVID-safe gigs in more than 300 venues across the state during Australian Music Month in November, in an effort to kick-start the recovery of the live music, hospitality and tourism industries.
Churchill has been a crowd favourite at the Junkyard for many years, and the feeling is mutual: "I'm playing a show at my favourite pub in the world, The Junkyard!" he said on his Facebook page this week when announcing the show.
The show will celebrate the release of Churchill's new single Nothing Nothing. Limited tickets are available (via greatsouthernnights.com.au) and COVID restrictions apply.
The Family Hotel Maitland and the Regal Inn Tenambit have also been included on the Great Southern Nights gig guide.
The Family Hotel will host the Viper Creek Band on November 7, Bill Chambers on November 14 and the Crawfish Stew Band on November 21.
The Regal Inn's lineup includes Georgie Winchester, Duncan Woods and Bobby C on November 22, and Emily Smith, Kazzie and Nick Rage on November 29.
Elsewhere in the Hunter Valley, local band Hornet will play at Tatler Wines on November 20 and Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson will play at The Mighty Hunter (formerly Potters) on November 21; while Dashville at Lower Belford will host Shane Nicholson & The Waste, Kevin Bennett & The Flood and Anna Weatherup on November 28.
Tourism minister Stuart Ayres said Great Southern Nights would provide music lovers from across the country many reasons to get out in New South Wales this November.
"New South Wales will come alive with great Australian music in November with gigs taking place in many of the state's greatest music venues, pubs, bars, bowling clubs and wineries," Mr Ayres said.
"With 2,500 artists performing in 300-plus venues across Sydney and more than 130 NSW towns, there is a gig spanning every genre and destination.
"The NSW Government is proud to be getting artists, roadies, venues, hospitality staff and tourism businesses back to work through this ambitious initiative and now it's over to the public to show their support by booking tickets to a gig or two, or more."
Great Southern Nights is delivered by the NSW Government's tourism and major events agency Destination NSW in partnership with the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).
ARIA CEO Dan Rosen said the Great Southern Nights program was coming at a critical time for the industry.
"This is an extremely important moment for the Australian music industry," Mr Rosen said.
"Great Southern Nights is an innovative and effective way of getting artists back on stages safely and ensuring money starts flowing back through the live-music ecosystem - to artists, venues, agents, tour managers and sound and lighting-crews.
"We can't wait to see the shows getting underway from November 5."
