Gruppetto Vino comprises friends and winemakers Nathan Heuston and Gavin Russell, chartered accountant Leonie Di Lorenzo (Mr Heuston's partner), and local businessman David Owen (Ms Di Lorenzo's cousin). Gruppetto is the Italian word for a small group and, in cycling parlance, a reference to the tail pack of race riders.

Leasing a winery space in Pokolbin, company's formation in August coincided with changes in regulations by the Italian government that gave its winemakers more freedom in making prosecco.

"In Europe ... until earlier this year, prosecco could only be made as a straight sparkling, no colour added," Ms Di Lorenzo said.

Local winemakers face no such restrictions, though most make prosecco in the traditional style.

"We see this as an opportunity to bring awareness of a new style of prosecco to the Australian market," Ms Di Lorenzo says.

Gruppetto Vino's Pink Prosecco is made from prosecco grapes from south-west NSW with minimal intervention, allowing its fruit characters to shine through with natural flavour, acidity and sweetness. A small amount of shiraz is added to give a light pink hue, adding complexity and complementing the fine bubble. It is fruit-driven but ultimately quite dry.

The first vintage was made in Mildura and Grupetto Vino is planning to plant grapes and grow and make its own - among other wine varietals - in coming years.

There are a few rose-style proseccos on the market, however Gruppetto Vino believes its version is the only one made using shiraz.

Sold online, Pink Prosecco's label is inspired by the Amalfi coast - for now, a dream destination.

"We wanted to create an experience, you can sit in the backyard and imagine you're lying on the beach in Italy with it," Ms Di Lorenzo says. "It's a fun wine but it's made with the intention that even people who are a little bit particular about wine will enjoy it because it's well made. It's not just frivolous."
