On Tuesday night, councillors reviewed a report with a status update on a mobile CCTV trial in the Maitland region.
Earlier this year, councillors supported a notice on motion for an investigation into a mobile CCTV trial as already done by Ryde Council.
As part of the motion, council officers have been investigating the trial by Ryde Council.
However, the report noted Ryde Council used the technology to target illegal dumping of waste.
"The purpose of the implementation of mobile CCTV for Ryde City Council is to deter and record incidents of illegal dumping," the report read.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"It is understood that Maitland City Council is primarily interested in utilising mobile CCTV to address various incidents of crime including antisocial behavior and vandalism.
"Research to date does not indicate whether mobile CCTV is effective for this purpose and further research into case study examples of this nature is required to understand the specific requirements and outcomes.
"Further research should seek information on the effectiveness and relevant considerations and the type of mobile CCTV products and models utilised to address different crime types including anti-social behavior and vandalism, by other Councils."
As part of the review council staff will now prepare a report regarding the findings which will return to council by April 2021.
Speaking on the report, Liberal councillor Mitchell Griffin said.there was potential for the region to become a leader in using the technology.
"It will be interesting to see how we go in regards to places like Rutherford where really this technology hasn't be utilised in the past with anti-social behaviour," he said.
"There is potential for Maitland to become a leader in using this technology in this space."
